The cycling world is buzzing with anticipation as João Almeida, a talented rider who has faced a challenging spring, prepares for his comeback at the Tour Auverge - Rhône Alpes. This return to racing is a crucial step for Almeida, who has been dealing with the aftermath of a viral infection that disrupted his training and performance.
In a recent interview, team manager Joxean Matxin shed light on Almeida's current situation, emphasizing the focus on the upcoming Dauphiné race. Matxin revealed, "We have a clear plan, and we're assessing Almeida's condition and recovery progress." This plan, however, leaves the Tour de France prospects somewhat hazy.
The Portuguese rider's journey has been marked by setbacks. A viral infection, which is not an injury in the traditional sense, kept him from training optimally for an extended period. His scheduled appearance at Paris-Nice was canceled, and he struggled to find his usual form at the Volta a Catalunya.
Despite these challenges, Almeida had his sights set on the Giro d'Italia. He even traveled to altitude in preparation, but a late April decision saw him withdraw from the race. With team leaders Adam Yates and Marc Soler facing injuries, there are gaps in the Tour de France lineup that Almeida could potentially fill.
"For now, it's just the Dauphiné. We'll assess the situation and decide if we shift our focus to the Vuelta a España or other stage races. If any issues arise before the Tour, Almeida could be an option, but we have our Tour team in place for now," Matxin clarified.
While Almeida is likely a reserve for the Tour de France, his inclusion is not a certainty. The team has experienced a season plagued by injuries, with ten riders affected on the WorldTour team and five on the Continental squad. This trend of injuries could open doors for Almeida, especially if more riders succumb to injuries.
"We plan for every race and have reserves. We know a lot can happen, but currently, João is only confirmed for the Dauphiné," Matxin concluded.
In my opinion, Almeida's story is a testament to the resilience of athletes. His ability to adapt and stay focused despite the setbacks is inspiring. The cycling community eagerly awaits his performance at the Dauphiné, and I, for one, am excited to see how he rebounds from this challenging period.
